Grease
Location: Piccadilly Theatre
The 1970s were a great time for musicals as Grease emerged both onstage and then later in the decade as a generation defining movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.
When people think of Grease, this is the set up that they imagine as the two Hollywood stars play out their romance in 1950s America against the backdrop of high school, greasers and great songs.
But it was not on the silver screen that audiences were first introduced to the story of Grease. For that, one must go back in time to 1972 when the show found great success as a Broadway musical before moving on to the West End two years later in 1974. Audiences would never look back, and just as Mamma Mia! hit cinema screen in 2008 following success on the stage, Grease had followed the same path thirty years earlier.
Audiences still have the chance of witnessing the spectacle that is Grease on the stage as it is currently running at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End. Its longevity in the capital has meant that a whole host of stars have been seen in the show, including Richard Gere, Elaine Paige, Tracey Ullman, Shane Ritchie, Craig McLachlan, Jimmy Osmond and in 2009 The X Factor finalist Ray Quinn.
Grease is a top role for any performer, as Ray Quinn pointed out in a press release for his stint as bad boy Danny Zuko, “I'm so thrilled to be playing 'Danny' in the West End. Grease is such an all time favourite and to be in the role made so famous by John Travolta is amazing- I can't believe my luck, it's a dream come true!”
We all remember the story of the bad boy Danny Zuko as he falls in love with the new girl Sandy Dumbrowski, all of this despite his hard man persona, his slick style and his position as leader of the gang known as the T Birds. But Sandy is the one that he wants and he will stop at nothing to find a way. By visiting the show you will be witness to all of the great characters, from the T Birds to Betty Rizzo and the Pink Ladies, and all of the classic songs, including “Greased Lighting”, “Summer Nights”, “Sandy”, “Hopelessly Devoted To You”, “Grease (Is The Word)” and the classic “You’re The One That I Want”.
So make sure you get your cheap theatre tickets for Grease and soon you could be joining in the fun.
